Making the VOIP Decision

I recently had someone comment on my "moving on" from Vonage. "Moving on to what, I may ask?" You may. It’s a good question. I find it time consuming trying to figure out what service best suits me. For consumers, looking into VOIP is like unraveling a ball of string. Before you know it, you’ve got a rat’s nest. With the Internet at your fingertips, it’s deceptively easy. Just start with Google, then click, click…click-click, then like, "Oh man, where am I?", Back button a couple of times. Then all the VOIP sites start looking the same, heck they all start sounding the same too… Here’s what I decided:

  • I want a phone number in my local area code
  • I prefer a softphone (point and click dialing from my PC). A handset with phone adaptor setup (like I had with Vonage) is handy, but not absolutely necessary in my case. Most of the time my work calls occur while I’m at my computer so a heaset/microphone setup works great.
  • I want voicemail and call forwarding (very basic, nothing fancy)

The top two options I’m considering are: Virtual number call forwarded to a softphone: CallCentric.com offers BC phone numbers at $5.95 per month. I can call forward to my Gizmo softphone account and then use Gizmo to make and receive calls. Gizmo rates within Canada are pretty cheap. Of course, if Gizmo ever decides to offer Canadian area codes, THAT would be even easier. PhoneGnome: PhoneGnome is available through Voxilla.com. It is a pretty amazing, self-configuring, do-everything, product. VOIP calls are free, I keep my regular phone number, and I can use the PhoneGnome softphone (SoftGnome) or call forward to my Gizmo account. PhoneGnome also works with Skype. I can also make and receive Skype calls on a regular handset using the add-on product GnomeLink. Choices, choices…

VOIP Spam–How bad is it?

I’ve been reading this week about NECs VOIP Seal anti-spam tool. VOIP Seal can detect if a call is computer generated and block it based on voice patterns. Alec Saunders also touched on it and pointed out that iotum is already anticipating the need for SPAM blocking with simple call screen capabity. GrandCentral does the same; they’ve got a SPAM registry where you can nominate the worse offenders so that everyone can block their caller IDs.

While I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more about the woes of phone SPAM in the future, I hope it’s something we won’t look back on and think, “If only we had done something back then…” In today’s report on M&C Tech News, they report the following statement from NEC:

“the existing infrastructure for producing spam e-mails (so called “botnets”) can easily be modified to also produce spam telephone calls. Today, the number of spam emails is higher than the number of regular emails produced jointly by all of the users in the internet. If unsolicited marketing and spam calls become as frequent as spam email, constantly-ringing VoIP phones may hinder the spread of their use.”

Alec talks about receiving annoying SPAM calls at the iotum office and we fielded one today at our house. A computer generated “Win a free trip” thing.

Cancelling Vonage

If you’re thinking of cancelling Vonage, I suggest you read Tom Keating’s post on cancelling his Vonage service. He recorded the entire call with the Vonage customer service rep (what a rascal), and transcribed it.

All in all, don’t be surprised if Vonage does more than ask you a few questions to get you to reconsider your decision to abandon ship. Like Tom, I decided to cancel Vonage recently (after only about 6 months). My call quality was terrible. While I didn’t get into quite the same pressure cooker, the Vonage rep did try to get me to reconsider, offering a few free month’s service, a chat with tech support, etc.

The rep also tried to make me think I was making a big mistake, a bad decision. I was a little taken aback. When I return something in a store, often I’m asked for the reason for the return. Never do I get into a debate about it. Kind of unnerving.

I wonder if they’d have better success if they just said “I sorry you had this experience with Vonage. It sounds like you’re pretty frustrated. I see why you’d want to cancel. But is there any way I could get you to reconsider? Would you be willing to try a couple more things to fix your problems before cancelling?” And if the answer is No, then the answer is No. Thanks and goodbye.

But Jajah Says No Headset is Best

Yes, I just bought a new headset. So when I read about Jajah’s new No Headset movement, I thought, ‘forget it Leanne, you can’t win’. They even have a web site:  http://www.noheadset.com. You can check out flicks of people trashing their headsets. (I’m not going to slapshot my shiny new $100 headset thanks.)

However, my take on this campaign can be summarized by their new tag line "If You Liked Skype, You’ll Love JAJAH". It’s a way to put themselves in the same league as Skype but also to differentiate in a way that says we do what Skype does and we do it better. Unlike Skype, JAJAH lets you make internet calls using your regular desktop phone, which is great. But, don’t some people choose headsets because they want to be "handsfree"? If that’s the case, blowing up your headset would be BAD. Whatever.

Skype Experts Please: How Long is Reasonable to Wait for Support?

I posted earlier about a two week wait for response from Skype. I didn’t think that was too bad at the time. But another blogger has been waiting for 6 weeks for support and his Skype account is unusable in the meantime.

What’s the deal? Skype is happy to take your money but if it doesn’t work for you, too bad?

Lots More Mobile VOIP to Choose From

Have you noticed that it’s raining mobile VOIP these days? Information Week asserts that VOIP has finally hit the mainstream wireless market and points to Fring, JaJah Mobile and Windows Mobile 6 as indicators who’ve all had new announcements this week. Truphone is also part of that crowd.

As a consumer, I’m happy there are options. But I’m also a consumer who’s not really ready. This mobile VOIP stuff means more decisions. What’s most important to me? Being in touch with my Skype contacts, my Google Talk buddies, my JaJah list or some other list somewhere? Do I like downloading an application to my phone or would I rather not–too finicky? Do I need multiple phone numbers for my cell phone? I like to use the Wi-Fi capability of my nifty Nokia N80i, but cruising around my usual haunts in town I’ve yet to find a free access point (obviously I need to get out more). The only place I’ve used mobile VOIP is from the comfort of my own desk.

Andy’s Six Tips for Video Calling

Following on Peter Csathy’s post about how he uses SightSpeed for business and personal communication, Andy shares six tips for making video calls. In a nutshell, 1) Get over it, your hairdo’s not that bad 2) Get a hat, 3) Come as you are, be comfortable, 4) Have good lighting, 5) Learn to multitask on camera, 6) Don’t worry about multitasking on camera, it’s not considered rude.
